Space Traveler Discloses Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her battle with depression after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also featured well-known figures.

The mission was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, referring to a check-in call from a mission companion in the days following the landing.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in female health science and performed experiments during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her studies and years of training to the symbolic importance of her roots – was overshadowed under the avalanche of misogyny.

She is best known for her pioneering work championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after an attack during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after reaching space, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose kindness helped save her. “You all saved me,” she said.

She added that amid the criticism, considerable good had resulted from the mission, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that passed the Kármán line of space.

The diverse crew also featured experts in various fields.

The venture behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
