Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Displacement Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Officials stated that the massive storm triggered widespread flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of millions of residents nationwide.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and homes being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people stranded on the roof engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official explained. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and another killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service stated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

Global warming is causing cyclones stronger and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists have found that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events result in approximately US$3.5 million in damage to the country every year.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
