Just as the recent storm tore through the northern region the night before, City blew United away at the Etihad. It was a convincing 3-0 triumph for the City coach's side thanks to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a display that clearly signaled their title credentials as they strengthened their place at the WSL pinnacle.

Successive Setbacks for United

This result marked successive Women's Super League losses for the United manager's side for the initial occasion since spring 2024, putting them a significant margin off the top team with their championship aspirations severely dented.

Manchester United's capability to juggle league and continental football with a small squad has been a frequently analyzed subject since they earned a place in the Champions League. Considering the fixture list, it always seemed this was the matchday that would truly test this capability. Sadly for the away side, they looked fatigued all game, the memorable win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having taken a toll.

Tactical Shifts

Commanding Opening Period

Scoring Spree

Shortly later, they had a third after a rapid turnover in possession saw Hemp afforded the space to strike a shot home from outside the box.

Second Half

The clearest change came from Skinner at the half-time as Melvine Malard entered for Terland but by this time it was ineffective to shift the momentum of the match. Former City player Park came most likely to score, rattling the woodwork, but the visitors were lacking in ideas and failed to produce a one shot on target.

The home side, meanwhile, could have extended their advantage when a delightful Miedema pass sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it mattered little to the winning team. After failing to overcome any team who ended above them the previous campaign, City's side now have victories against the Gunners and United to position them in a commanding position after nine games.
