Australia's captain Set to Play a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has secured 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, aside from the back issue, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he will feature a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
